Every year it's the same story. The first -10° morning shows up in November and parking lots all over town are full of cars that won't start. Most of those batteries were already weak back in September.
Our winter prep is an oil change plus the stuff that tends to quit when it gets cold.
What we check
- Battery load test. Cold cuts a battery's power almost in half.
- Coolant strength, good to at least -34°F.
- Wipers, and winter washer fluid that won't freeze on the glass.
- Tire tread and pressure. Pressure drops as it gets colder.
- Belts and hoses, since cold makes old rubber brittle.
When to do it
October is ideal. Once the first big cold snap hits, everyone calls at once and we fill up fast.
Do I really need winter washer fluid?
Yes. Summer fluid freezes right on the windshield, and that's a bad time to be driving blind behind a sanding truck on Highway 20.
