The Rexburg Winter Car Prep Checklist (Do This in October)

Rexburg winter isn't a few cold weeks — it's four-plus months of hard freezes, wind that comes off the bench and finds every gap, and mornings in the negative twenties. Cars that got away with deferred maintenance all summer get found out on the first truly cold morning. Run this checklist in October and skip the drama.

The Checklist

  1. Battery load test. Cold cuts a battery's cranking power nearly in half. A battery that's marginal in September is dead in January — always on the morning of an 8am final. The test takes two minutes.
  2. Switch to winter-grade oil. If your car parks outside, full synthetic is the single best cold-weather upgrade: it flows at -20°F when conventional oil has turned to sludge, protecting the engine in the seconds after start-up when most wear happens.
  3. Antifreeze strength. Coolant should protect to at least -34°F here. Weak coolant means a frozen block — a four-figure repair prevented by a thirty-second test.
  4. Winter washer fluid + new wipers. Summer fluid freezes on the glass at speed. Behind a sanding truck on US-20, working washers are a safety system, not a convenience.
  5. Tires: tread and pressure. Pressure drops about 1 PSI per 10°F, so tires set in August are seriously low by November. And tread depth is your traction budget on packed snow — check it with a quarter, not a penny.
  6. Emergency kit. Blanket, scraper, jumper cables, flashlight, phone charger, and a granola bar or two. Cheap insurance for the Rigby-to-Rexburg commute or the winter drive over to Driggs.

Why October?

Because the first hard cold snap is the deadline, not the reminder. Every year the first -10° morning fills parking lots across town with cars that won't start — and fills every shop's schedule for a week. Beat the rush.

Or knock out the whole list in one visit: winter car prep bundles the oil change with the battery, antifreeze, wiper, and tire checks. Call or text (208) 555-0173 — no appointment needed.
